Vocalist | Piano

Abby Schaffer

Abby is a lifelong vocalist and occasional pianist, who has led her own jazz band for more than a decade.  Abby has performed at three DC JazzFests, and was a longtime regular at such DC jazz clubs as Twins Jazz and Columbia Station in “the Before Times.” During the pandemic, she developed a solo project accompanying herself on piano while singing a selection of “jazzified” pop tunes, from the Beatles to Beyoncé. Abby grew up performing musical theatre and choral music, honed her ear for harmonies in her college a cappella group – and with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra Choir, recorded an original r&b demo with several New Orleans greats, including members of the esteemed Neville family, and released a CD of original tunes and favorite jazz numbers entitled “Play Along,” in 2016 (available on iTunes.)
Abby is also an Occupational Therapist at Holy Cross Hospital. Abby loves to engage with people, and is delighted to bring you a selection of songs from throughout the ages, from Jazz to Motown.

Ensemble | Band

Abigail’s Garden

This lovely group of women performs an engaging set of songs, from celtic, to gypsy, waltzes and originals that express beauty and whimsy. Each seasoned musician adds a unique touch to the varied selections, whether it’s a small original riff or a beautiful blend of harmonies. From clubs to festivals to concerts, this band brings an excitement that captivates their audiences.

Abigail’s Garden includes cello, ukulele, fiddle, guitar, keys and vocals. Lively songs like “Tell Me Ma” and “Whisky in the Jar” contrast with beautiful harmonies and lilting voices in songs like “Danny Boy”, “The Parting Glass” and “Caledonia”. These contrast well with lively instrumentals like the Irish tunes “John Murphy and Dennis Ryan Polkas” and the Swedish tune “Boda Waltz”. Added to this mix are original songs like Tish’s “Ukulele Blues” and “My Baby”, Renee’s “Tell Me”, and Laurie’s “The Monk’s March”. There are many more songs from the likes of Dougie MacLean, Eva Cassidy — even Dropkick Murphys and Jethro Tull!

His solo performances often include a cowboy song or two, some New Orleans jazz, old country songs, and even his own compositions. His audience-focused performances are always warm and engaging. Ashley Thomas

My name is Ashley Thomas, I am a wife and mother of two young children, I have a son and a daughter who both keep me intensely busy! I am from East Central Indiana, my hometown was expanded by my grandparents’ generation when the coal mines shut down through the Appalachians and people had to migrate North for work.  We all have strong ties to Southern roots and heritage and that cultural variance absolutely reflects in my music. My husband is a musician also, we met at the music venue in my hometown of Muncie Indiana, but he is from Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. I have been living out here on the East Coast for Nearly 8 years, which is wildly different from my very rural point of origin, but it’s been a very cool change of pace

Sample Song List:
Jolene, Dolly Parton
I’ll Fly Away, traditional
Coal Miner’s Daughter, Loretta Lynn
Folsom Prison Blues, Johnny Cash
Ring of Fire, June Carter-Cash
Wayfaring Stranger, traditional
Coat of Many Colors, Dolly Parton

Drummer | Lecturer

Martin Bradfield

Martin Bradfield has parlayed a 45-year professional Drumming career of gigs, books, recordings, teaching and writing into a multi-faceted, colorful and interesting blend of Communication, Rhythms, Art History and Philosophy. The result of this holistic approach to Art and Music has been literally reverberating in the streets and clubs and concert halls and also quietly reflected upon at Art Studios and schools. His book on Music and Drumming Philosophy, DRUMMING: THE FOREST and the TREES, has been very influential and is considered a unique and useful approach to Music, Drumming as well as other areas of Art.

The Martin Bradfield Trio
As a professional musician, Martin has played at clubs and concerts and schools and clinics and seminars since the late 70’s. His jazz trio has played at many hotels and clubs throughout the Philadelphia area since the 1990’s. Their CD, “ A Moment in Time “ was very well received. Their focus and “Mission Statement” is to play the classic Jazz Standards in an original yet respectful way, playing and creating a shimmering vibe. The group likes to be brief and melodic and conversational. Our guitar player’s wife insistence that we, ”make it pretty” has been taken to heart. In addition, Martin reveals some of the stories behind the standards to add another level to the event. The trio can be a guitar led or piano led trio and also be augmented, if need be, by additional instruments.
